Bertha Magdalen Black Powell

Bertha Magdalen Black Powell went to present with the Lord on July 9, 2013. She was the eldest of five children, born to Silas M. and Bertha Irene Burks in Moulton on April 27, 1922. Maggie was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the Chapter of the National Chrysanthemum Society. She had been employed by Alabama Hosiery Mills and Monsanto Corporation in Decatur and Rohm and Haas Company in Huntsville. Following a 21 year long career as an LPN, Mrs. Powell became a lifetime member of the Licensed Practical Nurses Association of Alabama, having graduated from John C. Calhoun Community College in 1977 and passing the State's Board Examinations in 1978.

She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia P. (LeRoy) Hirsch of Phoenix, Ariz.; and son, Phillip (Carol) Powell of Birmingham; four grandchildren, Clifford R. (Mary) Vaughn III of Phoenix, Ariz., Steven Bentley (Erin) Vaughn of Decatur, Shannon A. Powell and Lori A. (Bobby) Deavers of Birmingham and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive guests at Central United Methodist Church in Decatur beginning at 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon with the memorial service to begin at 2 p.m.

Maggie loved raising and sharing her mums, irises, bulbs and clippings with everyone so the family ask that in lieu of flowers or donations, to please share flowers with someone today.
