(The Daily Register, Harrisburg, 12/23/35)
James Edwards, 90, known to everyone as "Uncle Jim", the only civil war veteran at Galatia and probably the oldest person residing in Galatia, died Sunday at 12:40 p.m. after 12 days of illness from paralysis. Up to the time he had the fatal stroke of paralysis, twelve days ago, he was very active for his age and was highly esteemed by his neighbors and friends, among whom he was noted for his good humor and jollity.
Mr. Edwards enlisted in the army at the age of 17, at a recruiting office at Galatia, which is now a part of the residence of Frank Hall. He was not tall enough to meet the requirements in height at that time, and was fond of relating about how he stood on tip toes to make himself five feet and one inch tall, which was the army requirement.
He served with the 56 Infantry for sixteen months as a private, after which he served eight months in the Sixth Cavalry.
He is survived by his widow Ellen, three sons at Galatia, Williiam, Otho, and Cecil, and a son Joe of Phoenix, Ariz., and three daughters, Mrs. Martha Durham, Bradford, Ark., Mrs. Ollie Harris, Marion, Ill., and Mrs. Mary Fiveash of Crab Orchard; also many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Burial was at the Somers Cemetery at 1 p.m. today. Revs. Henry and Marshall Jones conducting the burial service.
Father: William Henry Edwards
Mother: Jane Edwards Edwards, daughter of Hiram Edwards
