Per the 1870 census, Lathrop, owner of "Bullene's" store at 741 Massachusetts, lived in the first ward, city of Lawrence, KS, with his wife Susan and their children William L., Kate, Susan A., Gertrude, John, domestic servant Margaret, and Susan's mother Phebe Read. The store offered grocery staples, cloth, implements, glass.

The store had survived Quantrill's raid in 1863, when raiders spared the Bullene home due to Susan's mother's poor health. Some reports indicate Susan fed many of Quantrill's troops until she ran out of food.

In 1883, Lathrop hired Arthur D. Weaver, and on June 7, 1883, Lathrop's daughter, Gertrude A., and Arthur D. were married.

When his health became an issue, Lathrop sold the store at 741 Massachusetts to his son-in-law, Arthur D. Weaver. The store was renamed "Weaver's" and eventually moved to 9th and Massachusetts street in Lawrence, where is operates today, 2014.

Some of this information was obtained from The Watkins Museum of History, Douglas County Historical Society, Lawrence, KS, Massachusetts Street: Monuments and Milestones, Weaver's Department Store.
