James Calvin Hemphill, son of Robert Reid Hemphill and the former Miss Eugenia Cornelia Brewton, was born on August 21st 1889 in Abbeville County, South Carolina.

On his 30th birthday, James married Miss Cleo Millway Davis, a daughter of Andrew Jefferson Davis and the former Miss Frances Jane McCaslan, in Greenwood. This union was blessed with three sons.
