He worked for the WPA on the construction of Coal Springs Dam and then at the coal mine at Gopher, SD. At age 20, he was inducted into the US Army on March 1, 1942 at Ft. Des Moines, IA. He started his basic training there and then was transferred to Mineral Wells, TX. Glenn was a truck driver attached to the 479th AMPH TRK CO (TC). He was involved in the North African Campaign, the Sicilian Invasion, the Naples-Foggia Campaign, and the Normandy, France, and Rhineland invasion. He arrived in the European Theatre August 19, 1942, the African Theatre on December 6, 1942, and back to Europe in July 1943. He earned the following decorations, European, African, Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Arrowhead Croix De Guerre with Palm. Glenn arrived back in the United States on January 12, 1945. He was discharged from the Army on August 28, 1945 at Ft. Lewis, WA. He returned to Lemmon where he went to work for George Papke driving bus hauling people to Sioux Falls where they would receive their physicals prior to entering the service. He also drove the "Clown Band" to their performances.

Glenn was united in marriage to Esther Marie Baumgarten on October 27, 1946 at Lemmon. They lived in the Athboy area for one year and then moved back to Lemmon. The Carmichael's have two daughters, Sharon and Dixie. He worked for George Papke for 14 years at the Ford Dealership. In May of 1960, he began driving bulk delivery truck for the Lemmon Equity. He was known by all the kids as the "Bubble Gum Gas Man". He retired from the equity in December of 1981. After his retirement, he would walk for miles in all directions picking up aluminum cans, waving to all the passersby. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Glenn was cared for at home by his wife. Due to his failing health, he entered the Ft. Meade VA Medical Center in January of 2005, which served as his home away from home. Although he missed his wife and family dearly, he quickly adapted and became more than just a friend or patient to the residents and staff. Glenn loved the residents, the staff, and his care he received while there. He looked forward to phone calls and visits from family and friends. He also enjoyed the many outings and group trips with his fellow veterans touring the Black Hills. He passed from this life there on Sunday, January 1, 2006 at the age of 86 years, 12 days.
