Franklin News-Herald, Monday, Dec 24 1923:
Nickleville News -- Samuel Maxwell, age 73 years, 11 months, and 25 days, died at 4:15 pm December 9 from pneumonia. He was born on the old Maxwell farm near here to Samuel and Julia Anne Burtsell Maxwell.
He married Gelina Best, who died 15 years ago.
He closed his home and went to live with his sister, Kate. He had been in ill health a few years, but kept about his labor duties most of the time up until two weeks ago, when he contracted a cold. Although medical aid was repeatedly called, congestion of the lungs quickly developed and caused his death. He has many friends who regret his death and will miss his familiar figure.
Surviving are his sisters, Miss Kate Maxwell of Emlenton and Mrs. Josiah Lynn; a brother, George Maxwell, both near here; and nieces and nephews. A daughter died in infancy.
Services were held at the home of his sister, Miss Kate Maxwell, near here, at 10 am December 11, with Rev. Chambers of Rockland officiating. Pall bearers were neighbors, David Best, Harry Bly, Clyde Mullen, Perry LeVier, William Beebe, and Raymond Karns, the last two his nephews.
