Nicholas Castillo was a miner at New Almaden and later worked as a cement finisher. His wife Sulema Cesena Castillo died in May 1907, a month after the death of their daughter Mariana, and three months before the death of their son Joseph. Daughter Beatrice died in 1899 and Vivian died a few months before Nicholas himself in 1913. Besides the children buried in the Hacienda Cemetery, there were five other Castillo children: Margaret, Ernestine and Nicholas Jr., William and Frederic.
According to the 1910 census, Margaret and Ernestine were students at the Notre Dame Institute in San Jose and Nicholas, William and Frederic lived at St. Anthony's Orphanage for Boys in Watsonville. Margaret later married Edward A. Espinosa, Ernestine became a nun and taught at Notre Dame and Nicholas Jr. married Evelyn Ivey.
