Joseph was a Baptist minister. He moved his family from Georgia to Bastrop County, Texas, about 1870. He had seven children with wife Mary Caroline Morgan, who he married on July 15, 1866.

According to application for Confederate pension:
Enlisted April 1862 and served until April 1865. Application states: surrendered with General Lee at Appomatox Courthouse in Virginia in 1865". Served first in artillery and then in infantry. Served in Company A, 12th Georgia Batallion as private.
