Bert will be remembered by many for his infectious smile and love for people. A lifelong Gig Harbor area resident and former banker, Bert spent his life serving his community, his country, and his family. Though Bert lost his long time battle with Parkinson's Disease on April 1, 2014, his life was a full one. He spent his summers salmon fishing outside the mouth of the harbor and his winters skiing at Crystal mountain, and spent the time in between clam digging, following the local sports teams, playing softball, traveling, and involving himself in the activities of his children and grandchildren. Bert loved things like traveling and Dixieland Jazz Festivals and dancing; he wasn't one to sit still and let life pass him by. He was a good husband, father, grandfather, and man. He was, and is, loved by his family the way he loved them: happily and wholly.
Born April 5, 1932 to Bert Sr and Ebba (Gustafson) Uddenberg, Bert grew up in Gig Harbor with his five older sisters and worked at his father's Ford dealership until he graduated with the first class of Peninsula High School in 1948. He went on to attend University of Washington where he joined Sigma Chi fraternity, graduating with a degree in Business Administration. Following graduation, Bert joined the Navy, and spent almost 7 years on active duty. His duty aboard the USS Ashtabula took him to the Far East. On March 22. 1958 he married his hometown sweetheart, Katherine Janes, and they were stationed in Long Beach, CA before setting sail across the Atlantic to live in Ethiopia for 2 years while Bert served with the Military Assistance Advisory Group to Ethiopia. They returned to San Francisco where their first child was born, and in 1962, Bert and Kathy returned to the harbor for good to raise their family. Bert served 15 more years in the Navy reserves before retiring as Captain and Commanding Officer of a local supply unit.
In 1963, Bert pursued banking as a post-active duty career before retiring at age 55. Though Bert enjoyed his banking career, it was his job organizing and facilitating LPGA golf tournaments across the country that lent itself to his "retired" lifestyle centered around a passion he and Kathy shared: golf. They spent many a winter in Hawaii or Palm Springs playing golf together with their many friends. Bert and Kathy were charter members of The Gig Harbor Golf Club (Artondale) where Scat Cat eventually became their game of choice. Bert always strove to give back to the community in which he was born and raised. He served on the Board of Directors for Peninsula Light Co., was Treasurer, Vice President, and President of the Gig Harbor Lions Club, Worshipful Master of the John Paul Jones Masonic Lodge, President of the Artondale Cemetery Association, member of the Eagles Club and proud of donating more than 13 gallons of blood.
Bert was busy but happy, and was surrounded by friends and loved ones until the end. No one ever had to ask if he cared; those close to him always knew that he did.
