VETERAN
WORLD WAR II

Early Life: Jack was born May 13, 1920, to John French Thurgood and Mary Ellen Park Thurgood. Jack loved to play the drums and played in the Provo High School band as they marched across the Golden Gate Bridge during its opening ceremonies. He was a State High School tennis champion.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: Jack served in the Hawaiian Islands LDS Mission and was a short distance from Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. He enlisted in the service, upon returning home, and married his high school sweetheart, LaGean Adamson, Nov. 6, 1942, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He served on the United States Strategic Bombing Survey Team overseas in the European Theatre of Operations. He received a Bachelor and Master's degree from BYU and taught Business Education there for six years. He then accepted a job with Geneva Steel in the training division and also worked for the Geneva Recreation Association. Jack played tennis while at BYU and enjoyed stringing tennis racquets, playing tennis with children and grandchildren and going on tennis trips with his wife and friends. Jack and LaGean played tennis until they were 89. Jack loved people and making friends. Throughout his life, these good friends and neighbors, both young and old, were always found with Jack and LaGean in their home, on tennis courts, playing games, on vacations, eating together and enjoying one another. Jack was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings. He magnified each calling with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. His home teaching callings were very important to him. Jack J. Thurgood returned to his Heavenly Father April 9, 2014.
