William Cox (COCKS) was born on 27 May 1770 in North Carolina to parents Thomas Cox and Sarah Unknown. He is a bit of a mystery to us tracking his line. According to an excerpt in a book about him (Cooper's Heritage with Cox Connections) he could have been anything from a courier for Daniel Boone to a Statesmen.
We do know that he married Mary Dillard in 1799 in Virgina. Mary Dillard was the daughter of Thomas Dillard and Ruth Goad. He and Mary became the parents to seven sons and one daughter.
Not all of these children survived to adulthood.
William died in 1814 in White County, Tennessee. We have a copy of his will dated 23 August 1814, a time when William was quite ill, as he states in the will. His last name was spelled COCKS or COX,in different documents during his lifetime. After his death, his widow took off for Gasconade County, MO with four teenage sons and re-settled there.
