John came to California while it was still part of Mexico. He participated in the Bear Flag Revolt and joined John Fremont's command during the Mexican War. He never married and was a farmer most of his life. He was committed to the State Hospital at Napa in 1891 and transferred to the Mendocino State Hospital about a week before his death.

In the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Kelseyville there is a plot (Gard Family Plot) with 7 graves marked by headstones without inscriptions. The headstones are rectangular in shape, rough in finish and were carefully placed with the bases buried to keep them upright. A Stone, in this manner, was also placed on each corner of the plot. This is the only burial plot within the cemetery marked in this manner. The cemetery records only indicate that the plot was purchased by Levi Gard (Mahala's Son), date unknown. No records of who is buried there appear to exist. I am fairly confident that the graves are of Levi's daughter Nellie Lucinda Gard, Mahala, her bachelor sons John, William and Jacob, and her spinster daughters Sarah and Rachel.
