Howard Martin Abbott died in his home in Holman Gardens, Spokane Valley, WA on September 6, 2006. He was the second of seven children of Ruth and Martin Abbott. He was born August 20, 1918, at Harrington, Washington. Howard spent his childhood years in the Harrington and Chattaroy, Washington areas and at St. Maries, Idaho. As a young man he lived in Spokane, Washington, working at a lumber mill.
In 1941 he married Dorcas Stairet. They had four children and were divorced in 1967. The family lived in Spokane, Deer Park, and Hunters, Washington where Howard was a farmer. In 1955 they moved to Oakesdale, Washington where Howard worked for Commercial Builders in the Pullman, Washington area as a carpenter. In the summer of 1962 Howard began working for the University of Idaho as a carpenter, moving the family to Genesee, Idaho, the following year. Howard married Verabel Swinford in 1967. They lived in Moscow, Idaho, moving to Clarkston, Washington in 1982, upon Howard's retirement from the University of Idaho. Howard had a variety of interests. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and had the most beautiful flower gardens in the area. He and Verabel enjoyed traveling on fishing and camping trips throughout the Northwest. He also enjoyed hunting with friends and his stepson, Steven. Howard delighted his family and friends with his woodworking and carpentry talents, making gifts for family and friends and constructing furniture for his church and others. Both the United Church of Moscow and the First Baptist Church of Lewiston are graced with crosses in their sanctuary made by Howard. Howard was an active member of the United Church of Moscow for 15 years and has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Lewiston for over 26 years. He has served as Moderator, Deacon and Trustee and in many other offices at these churches. He also taught Sunday School and served on the regional American Baptist Church Camp Board at Ross Point, Idaho for many years. Howard was also a member of the Grange achieving the 7th Degree.
Howard is survived by his wife, Verabel, his daughter Nancy Lee (John) Rolfsmeyer and her sons David Lohman Jr. and Jeff Lohman of Madison, WI; his son, Howard Abbott Jr. and his children Corrie Ellenburg, Brian Abbott, and Anne Marie Smithson of Spokane, WA; his daughter Judy (Harry) Howe and her children David Scott Kinyon and Tamara Geyer of Scottsdale, AZ; his daughter Rebecca Abbott and her son Jeremy Hylton of Coeur d'Alene, ID and his stepson Dick Swinford of Chelan, WA, and his daughters Lorrie Wise of Portland, Oregon and Barbara Trujillo of Entiat, WA. Howard is survived by 20 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Lillian Jansen of Deer Park, Virginia Gjelvik of Spokane and Irene Charbonneau of Springdale. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Royal, Ernie and Lowell and stepson Steven.
