Manley Askins, Jr., 73, a native of Fayetteville and resident of Huntsville, Alabama for 31 years, died Friday (September 10, 2004).
He is survived by two sons, Bruce R. Askins and wife, Lisa, of Madison, Alabama, and Gary Askins of Anchorage, Alaska; two brothers, Pat Askins and wife, Alverine, of Fayetteville, and Clifford Askins and wife, Carrie, also of Fayetteville; and a granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Askins.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Glynn B. Askins; a brother, John W. Askins; and a sister, Lou Anna Askins.
He retired from the U. S. Army with over 24 years of service.
He was a retired federal security officer for a combined total of 40 years of government service.
Mr. Askins was a veteran of both the Korean War and Vietnam War.
During his military service, he received the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Gallentry Cross with Palm, Sharpshooter Badge, and numerous others.
He was also a security officer for NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center where he received a Team Excellence Award from the Space Station Program Office.
Mr. Askins was a member of the American Legion Post 176. He was a long-time member of the Bicentennial Chapter of Redstone Arsenal where he served as head usher.
Memorial services held at Bicentennial Chapel at Redstone Arsenal. A visitation held at Higgins Funeral Home. Funeral service Saturday with Chaplain John J. Penney officiating. Burial with full military honors at Prosperity Cemetery.
