Lewis Rhines married Elizabeth Galer on February 1, 1901, in Clayton County, Iowa. Lewis and Elizabeth farmed in the Edgewood area for several years. At one time, Lewis also operated a livery stable and a movie theater (upstairs in the Hesner Building). Lewis and Elizabeth lost all of their possessions in a fire in August, 1921. The couple moved from Edgewood, Iowa to Oshkosh, Wisconsin and Lewis worked at Paine Lumber Company.
He moved alone to a farm near Merrill, Wisconsin, clearing many acres of timber and stone. In the mid 1940's, Lewis moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He managed a dairy farm for his neice and her husband (Isa and W. A. Wick). In later years, Lewis worked as a janitor and night watchman at Newman's Department Store and Guarantee National Bank. When he was in his late 80's and early 90's, he was thoroughly disgusted because he could not find employment.
