Stanley Kenneth Knudson, 94, of Brookings, SD and formerly of Centerville, SD passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at the United Living Community in Brookings, SD. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville, SD. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm with family present from 5:00pm to 6:00pm, Friday, April 4, 2014 at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings.

Stanley Kenneth Knudson was born May 16, 1919 to Sigvold and Ruth (Peterson) Knudson of Centerville, SD. He entered into his eternal rest on April 1, 2014 at the Compassionate Care Hospice, Brookings, SD at the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 14 days.

Stanley was baptized and confirmed at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville, SD. He grew up in the Centerville area and graduated from Eculid District #61 school.

On September 28, 1938, Stanley was united in marriage to Verla Holt at Emmanuel Lutheran Church near Wakonda, SD. Seven children were born to this union. In 2013, they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

During their early years of marriage, Stanley worked for Joe Haverberg in the well drilling/repair business, operated his own feed grinding business and then began farming. He was also employed for a time as a welder with Kolman Manufacturing in Sioux Falls, SD. In 1961, Stanley and Verla moved to the N.E. Lewis homestead in the Beresford area where they farmed and managed a dairy operation.

They purchased Wayside Motel in 1965 and relocated to Brookings, SD. Stanley collected antiques, coins and also became interested in genealogy. He and Verla made 3 trips to Norway to meet relatives and continue researching family history.

They retired from the motel business in 1982 and moved back to Centerville, SD. Always the organizer, he updated cemetery records for the Centerville and surrounding areas. At age 80, he purchased his first computer, continued his own research and enjoyed helping locate family information for others. Stanley enjoyed woodworking and may be best remembered for his unique styles of clocks.

As Stanley's health and eyesight began to diminish, he did not want to slow down so he used a magnifier and a brightly lit lamp to aid in his reading and record keeping.

A lifelong member of Scandia Lutheran Church, Stan served as an usher and served on the Trustee board. He also served on the school board for District 54 in Turner County. He was a member of the Sons of Norway, the Brookings Coin Club, the Brookings Genealogy Club and a lifetime member of the South Dakota State Historical Society.

After celebrating their 75th Wedding Anniversary in Sept of 2013, Stanley and Verla relocated to Stoney Brook Assisted Living Center in Brookings, SD in October. Stanley moved to the United Retirement Center in January of 2014.

He is survived by his wife, Verla of Brookings, SD; his children, Vera (Bennett) Nelson of Cherokee, IA, Kenneth (Joan) Knudson of Brookings, SD, Gordon (Jeannie) Knudson of Sioux Falls, SD, Betty Northcutt and Gail (Steven) Monteith both of Arlington, SD and James (Tyke) Knudson of Brookings, SD; 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, a sister, Ferne (Delmer) Olson of Beresford, SD and a brother, Delmer (Arlene) Knudson of Centerville, SD and one brother-in-law, Richard Anderson, Cherokee, IA.
