SERGEANT HARRY OLLERENSHAW
4609203, 7th Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment.
Harry married Hilda Pilling in 1935 at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Waggon Road, Mossley.
Their home address was 63 Bury Street, Mossley.
Harry was a native of Stalybridge and had moved to Mossley.
Harry enlisted at the age of 17 years,
and after two years’ service in Iceland he served in the European war.
Eight soldiers from “A” company of 7th Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s, West Riding Regiment, were killed near the railway crossing on Heerma van Vosstraat, on 29 October 1944,
including the Sergeant of the party, Harry Ollerenshaw, age 36 years.
They were buried on 30th October 1944 on land near the farm owned by the Kerstens family.
After the war their bodies were exhumed and reburied at the Bergen-op-Zoom English War Cemetery, Netherlands.
His monumental inscription reads,
“The Love In Life I Had For You, In Death Grows Stronger Still”.
Harry is commemorated on the St George’s Church war memorial in Mossley.
