OBITUARY-
AUSTIN -- Leo Brands, 75, of 700 Ninth St. S.W., a retired self-employed carpenter, died Sunday (Feb. 13, 1994) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Born June 15, 1918, in Crete, Ill., he graduated from River Forest High School and from Concordia College in River Forest in 1940. He did post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota and then taught at Trinity Lutheran School in Waltham from 1940 to 1942 and in Chicago until entering the Air Force. After his discharge, he was a journeyman carpenter under the GI bill, and worked as a self-employed carpenter for several Austin-area contractors until his retirement. On Feb. 24, 1943, he married Marie Mahnke at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waltham. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the VFW.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mary (Mrs. Loren) Hammermeister of Rochester; three granddaughters; and two brothers, Lawrence of Crete, Ill., and Marvin of Matteson, Ill. A son, a sister and two brothers preceded him in death.
The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Luthearn Church in Austin, with the Rev. William Natzke officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in Austin and an hour before the service Saturday at the church.
