His father came to this country before 1850 and worked the railroads in New York and surrounds where all his children were born. Matthews siblings were James Henry, Martin, Michael, Ellen (Coyne), Malachy, Mary, Patrick "P.L.", John B., Honora A. "Lenora" (Randall), and Margaret D. (Hennessey).
The entire family except the younger Michael, who remained in NY., moved to Cherry Valley, Ohio about 1872 when Bridget purchased land here. It was about this time that Matthew married Brigid Byrnes and where two daughters, Mary Ellen and Margaret Delia were both born -- Ashtabula, OH.
The entire family once more picked up and moved to Big Stone/Traverse County, Minnesota about 1881. It's possible the offer of land by the Catholic Church to Connmerra Irish may have been the reason for the move.
Sometime after the death of his first wife, Brigid, Matthew took the children to Duluth where he married Ann Nilas abt 1889. For a time he and Anna kept a hotel at Eveleth Village, Missabe Mtn., St. Louis before moving to the 'city' and working as a contractor and later keeping a grocery store.
