James, 69, of Clare, went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ; passing away at home with his family by his side on Saturday, March 22, 2014. He was born to the late Donald F. and Edna L. (Reed) Calkins.

Jim was united in marriage to Connie L. Denman on February 27, 1965 in the Mt. Pleasant Gospel Tabernacle. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1964. He had worked at Michigan Chemical in St. Louis and many years in the oil field before driving truck for himself. Jim enjoyed driving truck but had to retire early because of his health.

He loved camping and mowing grass (with his oxygen tank beside him), riding his golf cart, antique truck shows and his 1949 GMC pickup. Due to his Heart and Lung disease, towards the end of his life he had to give up doing and enjoying these things.

Jim was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. Jim had attended the Brown Corners Church.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Connie L.; his four children James R. II of Mt. Pleasant, Donald K. (Tracy) of Clare, Karen S. Hosky of Harrison and Michael F. (Jennifer) of Farwell; six grandchildren Josh, Justin, Brendan, Amanda, Mitchell and Caleb.

Jim was preceded in death by his sisters Donna Hanley and Vietta Wood; and a brother Robert F. Calkins.

Service was held at the Brown Corners United Brethren Church on Wednesday, led by Wendy Kindel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Brown Corners U.B.C. or to MidMichigan Home Care and Hospice.

Arrangements were handled by the Clare Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home.
