John was the son of Lloyd S. B. Goodwin and Emezetty Frances Kinslow.

He died during the Influenza epidemic that went through Indianapolis in 1918. John was the first in the family to die, two days later on the 31st of October both his brother and one his brother's sons died as well. John's youngest son, Edward was only 7 months old at the time of his death.
