Alexander was the son of Frank Clark Tiffin (born Aug. 1838 Ohio, died Jan. 7, 1930 CA), a miner and a hospital steward in the Township of Shasta in the 1880's, and his wife, Elizabeth 'Lizzie' A. Huseman (born 1854 MA, died Apr. 18, 1931 CA), who were married 27 April, 1878 in Shasta.

His older sister, Nellie May died in Shasta in 1881 at the age of one, and was buried in the center of plot 114 at the Shasta Masonic Cemetery. Alexander died a short time after, his birth and death occurring between the 1880 census and the family's move to Redding in 1883.

While his name appears alongside hers on the cemetery map for this plot, no headstone remains.

His older brother, Milton C. Tiffin passed away in Redding in 1884, at the age of five.
