Harold Maxfield Spencer 3/7/20 ~ 2/19/03 Harold Maxfield Spencer, age 82, passed away quietly at his Salt Lake City, Utah, home of complications related to metastatic melanoma. He was diagnosed just a few months ago, but failed quickly within the past two weeks. He was born March 7, 1920 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the third of five children born to Alma Baker Spencer and Alta Minnie Maxfield. Harold was a cheerleader and tennis player at West High School and attended the University of Utah. He served in the Intelligence Branch of the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. He worked in sales for several companies, then began a 35 year career with UARCO Business Forms, as salesman, district manager, and sales manager for the Western Region of 11 states. "Hal" retired in 1985. He married his cherished sweetheart, Beverly Watkins Searle, in the Salt Lake Temple on June 16, 1942. During their 57 years together, they delighted in each others' companionship. He considered his greatest accomplishments to be his marriage to his "angel" Beverly, and their five sons and their families. He was proud that all five sons chose to serve missions, graduate from college, and marry their own sweethearts in the temple. He adored his 20 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, and they all adored him. Harold was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in numerous positions in the Yalecrest Ward and Bonneville Stake, and as a Temple Worker. He loved being a ward greeter for many years and took the opportunity to learn the names of the members, especially the children whom he loved. He wanted to be certain that everyone received a warm handshake, and often, a special hug. He lost his dear Beverly on August 18, 1999, and looked forward to being with her again. He is survived by his sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Son, Gregory J. (Marjorie) and children, John, Suzanne Wirthlin (John) and great-grandchild Kate, Rebecca Biggs (Joseph), Mark, and Christine; son Stanford S. (Yvonne) and children, Justin (Renée), Andrew, Chadwick, and Jordan; son Mark H. (Beverly) and children Stephen (Kerry), Barbara, and Catherine; son Matthew A. (Cynthia) and children, Elizabeth, Matthew, William, and Thomas; and son, Timothy S. (Marie) and children, Sara, Jennifer, Brian, and Alison. Harold is also survived by his brother, Alma Glenn Spencer (Anna Lea), and sister Vivian Frisbey (DeVern Curtis, deceased), and sisters-in-law Mary Schriever (William Clarence, deceased), Ruby Brown (Richard), and Patricia Lowder (Dee, deceased). He was preceded in death by his sisters, Kathryn Terry (Steven, deceased), and Betty Wood (William), brother-in-law Allen Searle (Helen, deceased), and sister-in-law Phyllis White (William). Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 22, at noon at Yalecrest 1st Ward, 1035 S. 1800 E.
