OREGON STATE JOURNAL, Eugene, Oregon, 15 APR 1865, page 2:
"FATAL ACCIDENT-THREE LIVES LOST"
Last Sunday, while some persons were crossing the Middle Fork of the Willamette river, near Butte Disappointment in this county, one of the forward wheels of the wagon came off, and the passengers were thrown out into the river. A Mrs. McCulley and her child, and a sister, a Miss Bagley of
some twelve or fourteen years old, were drowned. At last accounts tow of the bodies-that of the child and the young
girl, had not been recovered."

The next few issues of the paper were searched were searched and no further information concerning recovery of the other two bodies, a funeral or burial was ever found. The BAGLEY women who drowned were:
Mary BAGLEY, b. 12 Apr. 1842; d. 9 Apr. 1865; m1) Jesse ADAMS, m2) Sam McCULLEY.
Matilda BAGLEY, b. 31 Jan. 1853; d. 9 Apr. 1965. Both were daughters of Eli BAGLEY, Jr. and his wife, Nancy Ann BELT.
