She was a member of Freedom Tabernacle. She and her husband owned Shumate and Shumate Sanitation Company. Leila did a lot of volunteer work at Freedom Tabernacle with the Outreach Ministries.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Shumate; parents, Tate and Gennie Strayhorn; brothers, Thomas, Myron, Gene, Herman, and Woodrow Strayhorn; sisters, Hazel Melton and Lucille Anderson.

Survivors include her children, Molly Melton of Cumming, James A Melton (Barbara) of Ellijay, Gwen Hyde (Earnest) of Dawsonville, Jeff Shumate of Cumming, Tammy Saylors (Charles) of Cumming; step children, Lera Dorsey of Hoschton, Shirley James of Hoschton, Barbara Cagle (Tommy) of Cumming, Ricky Shumate (Elaine) of Cumming, Brenda Gooch of Cumming, Ronnie Shumate of Cumming; 33 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; sister, Macie Charles of Cumming; brother, Shorty Strayhorn, of Cumming; sisters-in-law, Emma Shumate of Cumming, Rachel Shumate of Marietta special friends, Brenda and Dora Ann.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 17th, at 1:00 pm at Ingram Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robbie Mathis, Rev. Stanley Hicks, Rev. Joe Watson and Rev. Jerry Pruitt officiating. Interment will follow at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Ingram Funeral Home on Saturday from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm, Sunday from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm and Monday from 9:00 am until hour of the service.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Concord Baptist Church Missions or Freedom Tabernacle Missions.
