William Daniel Richard Aston was born in Fayette County, TN to Daniel Thomas Aston and Ann Hamilton Rutherford on October 1, 1835. His father died in a hunting accident when W.D., as he came to be known, was only three years old. Soon after that, W.D. fell from the lap of his nanny and twisted his leg causing permanent damage and requiring him to walk with crutches or a cane the rest of his life. But this did not prevent him from getting an education and becoming a school teacher in the Tippah and Benton county area. At other times W.D. was a Deputy Sheriff and a Justice of the Peace. He also belonged to the Masonic Lodge of Blue Mountain and the Flat Rock Baptist Church.
