"Israel Bitting Falls Dead:
Israel Newkirk Bitting, of near Walsingham, fell dead in the harvest field last Tuesday. He had been cradling wheat and his wife was helping him with the work when his end came.
He was a soldier of the Civil war and member of the Methodist church. He was married three times and to these wives were sixteen children born. His first wife is buried near Lebanon, Pa., and the second at Saville; the third survives him. His body was interred in the Saville cemetery Friday morning. He was 73 years old."

Israel was survived by eleven children and his wife, Susan Brumbaugh Bitting, to whom he was married ~1896

He was first married to Lydia Schreckengaus until her death in 1864. He then married Mary Anna Rupp, who he also survived.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Lebanon County on Oct. 23, 1862, mustered in to federal service at Harrisburg on Oct. 30 as a Corporal with Co. B, 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry ("Drafted Milita") and was honorably discharged with his company on August 17, 1863. (enlistment information provided by Dennis Brandt)
