Benjamin Sturdivant Yandell, 84, died Tuesday March 11, 2014. Graveside services will be held Friday March 14, 2014 at Parkway Memorial Cemetery at 11:00am which will be conducted by Dr. James M. Baird. Visitation will be at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home Highland Colony from 10:00am till 11:00am.

Mr. Yandell was born in Greenwood, Miss. on August 21, 1929. He moved with his family to Vance, Miss. in the early 30's where his father farmed a large cotton plantation. Attending local schools, Mr. Yandell graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1947 and from Mississippi State University in 1951, where he was affiliated with Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa. He served two years in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Okinawa following graduation. Returning to Vance in 1953, he joined his father and brother in cotton farming.

Mr. Yandell was a Presbyterian. He served as a Deacon and later an Elder in the Marks Mississippi Presbyterian Church. He was later a member of first Presbyterian Church in Jackson. While in the Marks area, he was one of the founders of Delta Academy in Marks.

In 1980, he and his wife moved to Jackson where they enjoyed a retired life of travel and he perfected his advocation of knifemaking.

Ben Yandell is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Julia Shannon of Pontotoc, Miss. He is also survived by three children; Benjamin Sturdivant Yandell, Jr. and his wife Johanna of New York City, Mae Yandell Hitchcock and husband Dan, of Alsea, Oregon, Jane Yandell Nalty and husband Raymond Nalty of Jackson. He is also survived by five grandchildren; Raymond Joseph Nalty IV of Little Rock, Arkansas, Benjamin Yandell Nalty of Jackson, Wilson McBride Nalty of Jackson, MS., Mae Lee Hitchcock of Alsea, Oregon, Christopher Tiemann Yandell of New York. Surviving also are one brother, William McBride Yandell, Jr. of Memphis, TN, two nephews, Will Yandell of Memphis and Clifton Yandell of Chicago, Ill. and one niece, Susan Yandell McKee of Clarksdale, MS.
