Amalia was born in Gaghazvan, Turkey to Misak Hacopjanian and Haiganoush Nahabedian and was uprooted with her family due to the Turkish invasion of her village in 1918. Her father was killed and the rest of the family settled as refugees in Tbilisi, Georgiam which soon was taken over by the Soviet Union. While traveling to what is now Gyumri, Armenia, Amalia met Kerope Der Avedisian. He pursued her when she returned to Tbilisi for school, and as Kerope was relentless finally her family gave consent for them to marry. They married in Micop, Russia where Amalia had a cousin on September 29, 1929. Kerope brought Amalia to live with him in the United States in 1930 and they settled in Springfield, where they had three daughters. Amalia was a devoted mother who was full of wisdom and advice for her family.
