Daughter of James John and Emily (Astor) Van Alen. Her mother came from the famous affluent Astor family. She married Robert Joseph Collier in Newport, Rhode Island on July 26, 1902. In 1927, after the death of her her husband, she turned over the Rest Hill estate to the Sisters of the Good Shepherd to operate a training school for troubled adolescent girls called the Collier School for the Care and Training of Girls.
