William was born into an educated family. His parents were Jordan Sea Robinson and Priscilla Dorland and his siblings were: Dr. Luke Robinson, Cynthia Ann, Mary Melinda, John Garrett, Laura R., Elizabeth, Ellen Jane, Viola M., Winfield Scott, Winifrid, and Alice Robinson. William went to medical school in England, but did not finish, and became a ranch owner in Spokane County, Washington. His first wife was Elizabeth Clare Hoy and together their children were: Genevieve M., Luke Hoy, Mary Marguerite, Hazel, and Ethel Claire Robinson. His first wife died in 1894 and he then married Priscilla Jane Grant who was twenty nine years younger and together their children were Ruth Irene Robinson Abbott and Loring Grant "Bob" Robinson. William and Priscilla came from two different worlds, thus their marriage didn't last and they divorced sometime before 1910. William was a successful business man and rancher. He believed in education and provided good college educations for all his children if they wanted one. His family heritage goes back to the 1763 incident with Chief Cornstalk, known as the Muddy Creek Massacre.
