ROBERT E. DOWNING, 84, of Memphis, retired owner of Downing's Grocery, died Thursday at Kirby Pines Manor. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Forest Hill Funeral Home East with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery Midtown. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church and was former president of Memphis Retail Grocers Association. He leaves three daughters, Jo Anne Gassaway of Tumacacori, Ariz., Donna Phillips of Cordova and Phyllis Tutor of Germantown; three sons, Robert W. Downing and Phillip Downing, both of CorDova, and David Downing of Bartlett; two sisters, Virgie Hall of Bartlett and Leola Stroupe of Viola, Ark.; a brother, Ernie Downing of Hornbeak, Tenn., 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
