For many years Mr. Wirsing was connected with the late William R. Merker in the carriage manufacturing business at 109-111-113 East A Street, the present site of Wagner Motor Company. The company was established by the partners in 1883 and was called Merker and Wirsing Carriage Works. Mr. Merker, who after his retirement from business was a contributor of the News-Democrat editorial page, died on January 12, 1938.
Active until his illness, Mr. Wirsing was often seen walking from his home to the downtown section. He was born in Belleville on January 5, 1854, and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wirsing, nee Margaret Ehret, both natives of Germany.
He attended the local public schools and later learned the trade of a carriage-maker, working in various cities, including St. Louis, until 1882 when he returned to Belleville. The following year he entered in partnership with Mr. Merker and the two enjoyed a profitable business, making all types of spring vehicles for many years. They specialized in closed storm buggies such as were used by physicians. Their products were shipped to all parts of the country.
On May 10, 1874, he married Lottie Wenz and after her death he married Emma Graf in Edwardsville on June 22, 1918. She survives. Also surviving are a son:
Otto K. Wirsing, Cleveland, O.
