James immigrated from Sligo, Ireland in about 1849. He then settled in West Shefford, Brome Co., Canada, then later moved to Vermont.

He married Rosanne Hart on June 5, 1854 in Nortre Dame de Granby, Quebec, then Lucy McCarthy August 18, 1878 at Saint-Andre-de-Sutton.

His occupations were listed as bark peeler/dealer; and railroad worker.

In the 1870 census for Newbury, Orange County, Vermont, his wife was Rosana, and his children were listed as: Anora, Rosa Ann, Patrick, John, Katie R, and Margaret E

In the 1880 census for Newport, Orleans, Vermont, his wife was Lucy, and children were listed as: Patrick, John, Katie, Maggie, Edward, and Everline. (Katie, Maggie, Edward, and Everline were born in Vermont. The older children were born in Canada.)

James died Sep 18, 1883 of typhoid pneumonia.
