In 1853, when Elizabeth was 15 years old, she left Illinois, with her parents, James & Mary Ford, to cross the plains to the new Oregon country. Three years later she was united in marriage to J.J. Bell. Story has it John and Elizabeth met on the Oregon Trail while traveling in the same covered wagon train emigrating to Oregon, but this cannot be proven as few wagon train rosters were kept.
