He left Illinois, with wife and children, Apr. 10, 1853 and arrived in Oregon Nov. 6, 1853. Acquired land claim in Bridgeport Dec. 10, 1853. James was was a farmer.
Up to the time of his death he had been hale and hearty. He was engaged in chopping down a tree, when it fell and struck another tree and a large limb broke off and hit him with a terrible blow in the back, breaking two ribs and partially dislocating his spine and injuring him internally. His death occured about a week after the accident.
He was known as "Uncle Jimmy" in the community and was widely known and universally respected, a kind neighbor and good citizen.
