Stouten was the 8th child of Hatch and Susannah Edwards Dent. He was a student of Charlotte Hall Academy in Saint Mary's County from 1821-26. From 1828-31 he attended the University of Maryland in Prince Georges' County where he graduated in 1831. While attending UMD he married Lydia B. Watts, January 5, 1830. They had a child born 1831 and died January 12, 1831. Lydia died January 13, 1831. In the Spring of 1831 he became a practicing physician in Charles County Maryland. June 5, 1832 he married Mary Catherine Smoot. They resided at Allen's Fresh until his death October 7, 1883. During the Civil War Stouten was a Confederate sympathizer.
