Nancy Conrad was born in Indiana. Census information conflicts as to the year of birth, giving dates between 1820 and 1826.

On January 29 1843, Nancy Coonrod married Wiley George Dawson in Meade County, Kentucky. The names, date and place are included on the marriage certificate included in the pension file. Her name is spelled the same on both the marriage license and the marriage certificate. The file also gives her maiden name as Kinrod.

By the 1850 census taken on August 1st, Wylie and Nancy lived in New Albany, Floyd, Indiana. Wylie's occupation is listed as "None." The couple had three children listed in the census: Phillissa, age 6; Malinda, age 3; and Isaac, age 1 month.

By the 1860 census taken on August 13th, Wylie and Nancy lived in Northwest Township, Orange, Indiana. No occupation is listed. At this date the couple had six children: Phillissa, age 16; Malinda, age 14; Isaac, age 11; James, age 8; Jincy, age 5; and William, age 3. A daughter Margaret is named on the Civil War Widow's pension.

On July 31, 1861, Wylie Dawson of Vincennes, Orange County, Indiana enlisted in the 24th Regiment, Indiana Infantry to fight for the Union with the rank of Private. He died on May 16, 1863 at the Battle of Champion Hill, part of the Vicksburg Campaign. He is buried at the Vicksburg National Military Park, MS, Section O Site 3760.

On Jan 16, 1864, Nancy Dawson petitioned the United States government for a Civil War Pension as a widow: Application no. 42962, Certificate no. 46568.

At the time of the 1880 census, Nancy lived in Charleston, Coles, Illinois. Her grown sons William and James lived with her at that time and are listed as "Laborers." She listed her occupation as "Keeping House." Daughter Phillissa Hiser and her three daughters are listed as the next family on the record with Phillissa now listed as widowed/divorced. Daughter Jincy, now married to Lot Loving, lived in Charleston as did son Isaac and his wife Elizabeth(Loving).

At the time of the 1900 census, Nancy lived in Charleston, Coles, Illinois. Her son James now lived with her, listed as divorced. William and wife Susan(Conrad) now lived in Charleston as did Jincy and Lot Loving. Isaac and Elizabeth Dawson now resided in Hutton, Coles, Illinois. Their daughter Clara Ann Dawson and new husband Sylvester McComas also lived in Charleston near Jincy(Dawson) and Lot Loving.

Nancy Dawson died March 10, 1911 at Charleston, Coles, Illinois. Her pension file gives her death date and burial location of Mound Cemetery.
