CHARLESTON HOME VISITED BY TRAGEDIES
Death and Fire Lay Grim Hands Upon Stine Family.

Special to The Journal-Gazette.
Charleston, Ill., Dec. 28. - Tragedy still stalks about the home of Charles Stine of Charleston. It struck with vengeance Tuesday night.

Mrs. Malinda Stine, died at 7:10 o'clock Tuesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Hammack, 407 Madison street, and three hours later, her home at 421 North Tenth street, was destroyed by fire.

Charles Stine and their son, Thomas Stine, and the latter's nine motherless children saved only a few articles of wearing apparel. Everything else that they owned was lost and the homeless family is reported in circumstances bordering on destitution.

Suicides Year Ago.
Mrs. Thomas Stine, about a year ago, took her life by taking arsenic poison. A few years ago, three brothers of Mrs. Malinda Stine, Enoch Dawson, Isaac Dawson and James Dawson, moved to San Diego, where they obtained employment. Enoch soon afterward met death in a street accident. A short time later Isaac was killed, and James died from natural causes.

The cause of the Stine fire Tuesday night is not known. The family had no time to save anything. The house had five rooms. The loss is more than $1,000, partly insured.

Mrs. Stine had been an invalid for four years. Six weeks ago her condition became such that she was removed to the home of her daughter for special attention and care.

Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Schorten & Lewis chapel with Rev. H. L. Hayes officiating. Burial will be in Mound cemetery.

Native of Kentucky.
Mrs. Stine was born in Kentucky. She never told her children her age and none know how old she was. She resided in Charleston for more than fifty years.

Mrs. Stine was married twice. Her first husband was George Oakes whom she wedded in Indiana. To this union three children were born. Mrs. Hammack is the only one living. After her marriage to Mr. Stine, three children were born. Of this family, Thomas Stine is the only surviving one. She had ten grandchildren, all living.
