Lieutenant Bruce Britt, a 23 year veteran of the Columbia Missouri Fire Department lost his life on February 22, 2012.

The fire department responded to the structural emergency and worked to evacuate the building. But during the rescue, a second floor exterior walkway collapsed and severely injured Britt, who later died in the hospital.

Witnesses reported they saw Lieutenant Britt fall as he tried to help students evacuate.

Born Nov. 23, 1965, to Stormy and Wanda Britt in Truth or Consequences, NM, and raised in Williamsville, IL.

Bruce started his firefighting career as a member of the Williamsville Volunteer Fire Department at a young age.

Bruce was preceded in death by his dad, Stormy.

Survivors include his wife, Leigh; daughter, Stormy Ann; two sons, Paden and Ethan; mother, Wanda (Howard), two sisters, Heidi (Ron) and Kristi (Brian); nephews, Clay, Kenyon, Avery, and Chase.

Bruce knew Jesus as his Savior and we can all rejoice through the tears knowing that we will see him again.

Memorial services are scheduled for Thursday, February 26th at 10 a.m. at the Crossing Church on 3615 Southland Dr.

Fellow firefighters around the nation left this comforting refrain: "Rest Easy, Brother. We Will Take It From Here."

The brother-and-sisterhood of firefighters has a comforting prayer, too. It's called the "The Firefighter's 23rd Psalm" and goes like this:

The Lord is my Chief.

He leads me to fires raging around me. He restores my soul for the fight.

He has prepared a place for me in this life: Devoted to honor, service, duty and fellowship.

He appoints my soul with courage to fight in the presence of our enemy, Fire.

Yes, even though I have chosen this life, in the shadow of death, I will fear no fire, for God is with me. His goodness and strength comforts me.

And when life's final alarm for me has sounded, I will dwell forever, in the Station House of The Lord.
