Former Postmaster Dies in Albany

John H. Stebbins, a native of the town of Perinton and a life-long resident of New York State, entered into rest in Albany on Thursday, March 10, 1949. He had been ill several months.

Mr. Stebbins was born Feb. 7, 1869, in Bushnell's Basin, the oldest of ten children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stebbins. His entire life, until 1915, was spent in Monroe County, much of that time in Fairport. He served as postmaster of Fairport for one term and then moved to Albany, where he was employed for a year in the State Department. From 1917 until his retirement in 1941, he was in the Adjutant General's Office.

His first wife, Georgia Martin Stebbins, passed away a number of years ago and he later married Mrs. Sarah Hines of Troy. In 1943 he married Mrs. Lillian Pannell Briggs of Fairport, who survives him. Surviving also are his daughter, Mrs. Hazel Cropsey of New York, and a sister, Mrs. Mayme Shular of Danville, Ill.

Mr. Stebbins was a member of Fairport Lodge No. 476, F&AM, and this year received his life membership. He was also a member of Hamilton Chapter, RAM, of Monroe Commandery and Damascus Temple.

Services were held Sunday afternoon from his late home in Albany, Dr. Edward Carothers of Calvary Methodist Church officiating. Final rites were held Monday afternoon in Fairport, Rev. Howard V. Moses, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiated and interment was in South Perinton Cemetery. Masonic services were conducted by Fairport Lodge.
