John was the son of George and Betty Moore. He was a 1973 graduate of Brookfield High School, Brookfield, Mo. He starred in football. He died in the Emergency Trauma Unit of Moline, Illinois ( Public Hospital) from injuries suffered to his chest , abdomen, and legs.

Rock Island Cornoner, Jim Shaw, who said an inquest may be held into the accident, reported that Moore was working on a Mississippi River Barge the "Cecilia Carrell" owned by Consolidated Towing of Kansas City, Mo.

The barge was headed up stream and shortly before noon had entered lock and dam No. 15 on the river. Moore, one of three crewmen on the boat, attempted to jump from the barge onto the seawall inside the lock. He slipped, however, and fell on the seawall. As he clung to the wall, the continuing, forward motion of the barge crushed him.

Moore in his senior year at BHS, won all conference all district recognition as a football halfback. He was the Bulldogs leading rusher in the season of 1972 and was one of the yardage leaders in the North Central Missouri Conference. He also participated in basketball and track, and other activities of the school.

He is survived by his mother, Betty Moore of Brookfield, and his father, George Moore, of Brighton, Colorado, his brother, Shawn Moore, of the home, his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ted VanLandingham, Chillicothe, and his paternal grandmother, Marian Moore, Palmyra, Mo.
