Son of Ladroit Champlin & Elizabeth Prosser (who is buried in the Sand Hill Cemetery at Seneca (Ontario County) New York.
Ladroit's surname was "Champlin" and not "Champlain" as is sometimes claimed. He was the great great great grandson of Jeffrey Champlin who was a founding settler of what are now known as Portsmouth (in 1638) and Newport (in 1639), Rhode Island. Jeffrey (or Geoffrey) was born in the Azores of English parents.
