Civil War Veteran

Death Claims Honored Ora Citizen.
Samuel Oberlin, a highly respected citizen and former postmaster of Ora, Ind., was born in Limestone township, Union county, Penna., June 19, 1844. He was educated in the common schools of that place, after which he came to Lima, Ohio, where in 1863 he enlisted in the service of the United States during the civil war., and became attached to Co. 7, 1st. Reg. of Inf., Ohio Volunteer Sharpshooters. His regiment became the body-guard of General Sherman, and followed that splendid leader on his march from Atlanta to the sea. He became very intimately acquainted with the general and stood guard many times at his tent door. He was discharged from the service July 28, 1865, at Camp Chase, Ohio.
He united with the Lutheran church in his early life and had been a faithful worker for Christ all his life. He stated many times to the writer that his life was faultless before his Creator and that he had no fear of death; that it would only take him home to his Savior. He had suffered for many years with heart trouble and about two years ago was afflicted with a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered completely, but was a patient sufferer and always ready to give a cheering word and financial aid to those who were less fortunate than himself.
In 1868 he came to Indiana and settled at Goshen, entering business for himself as a boot and shoe maker.
Here he met and married Miss Margaret Hunt. To this union were born four children, one daughter Alice, and the wife have preceded him in death. He again united in marriage March 20th, 1906 to Miss Emma Rank.
He moved to North Bend township, Starke county, Indiana in the year 1879 and settled on a 40 acre farm and later moved to Ora, where he passed away at the late residence December 22, 1921 age 77 years, 6 months and 3 days.
He leaves to mourn their loss the wife, Mrs. Emma Oberlin, one son John of Ora, two daughters, Mrs. Lepta Keller of Defiance, Ohio, and Mrs. Edith Arnold of Standwood, Michigan, also seventeen grandchildren, with a host of other relatives and friends.

Dearest father, thou hast left us,
And our loss we deeply feel,
But 'tis God that has bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal.

Yet again we hope to meet thee,
When the day of life is fled,
When in Heaven with joy to greet thee,
Where no farewell tear is shed.

The funeral was conducted from the Ora church Monday morning at 10 o'clock in charge of Elder G. Flet Short assisted by Rev. J. S. VanOrman and the Knox Masonic Lodge of which he was a member. Interment was made in the Center cemetery of North Bend township.
