J. E. was born & lived his entire life in Micanopy, Florida. He attended the local school and then Massey's Business College in Birmingham, Alabama in 1906, having received a scholarship to the commercial department. The next year he attended Massey's in in Jacksonville, Florida. J. E grew-up in his father's business and when his father died in 1937, became part owner with his brothers Barton & Leon. He bought-out their interest and operated the General Store & Mercantile Business until 1973. J.E. was interested in farming and cattle. During most of his life he maintained a small herd of cows, mostly milk cows, he bought and sold many properties. He share-cropped with several men and planted tobacco (owned drying barns), beans and melons. He leased property on Orange Lake at Evinston for 20 years and operated the North End Fish Camp. J. E. loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of the Hawthorne Hunting Club. J. E. served on the Micanopy Town Council for over 25 years and holding the Treasurer and Secretary positions. He would not run for Mayor as it would be "bad for business" as the Mayor was also the judge in town. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 75 years and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was an active Presbyterian. He was appointed by the Governor to the State Welfare Board #5 for several years.
