William Speke JP DL was the eldest son of Captain William Speke (1798-1887) and Georgina Elizabeth Speke nee Hanning (1805-1879).
His seven siblings were:
1. Captain John Hanning Speke (1827-1864)
2. Edward Speke (1829-1857)
3. Revd. Benjamin Speke (1830-1881)
4. Georgina Harriet Speke (1835-1913)
5. Elizabeth Speke (b.1839)
6. Sophia Speke (1841-1931))
7. Matilda Speke (1845-1928)
On the 3rd of April 1850, at the Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Uplyme, he married Eliza Anne Ethelstone (1826-1899). She was the daughter of the Revd. Charles Wicksted Ethelston (1798-1872), the Rector of Uplyme, Nr Lyme Regis.
Following their marriage William and Eliza resided at the Speke ancestral home of 'Jordans' at Ashill, Nr Ilminster, Somerset, where they resided for about 10 years. In 1887, on the death of his father, he inherited the Jordans Estate. He also served as a local Magistrate and Deputy lieutenant of the County of Somerset.
His wife, Eliza, died in 1899. William died at Chard, Somerset, on the 5th of May 1908, aged 82 years. He was buried in a vault, South of the Chancel in the churchyard at St Andrew's Church, Dowlish Wake, Somerset.
