Before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard, Allen was attending Southern Illinois Normal University.
He was sent overseas Dec. 14, 1943, and was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was assistant to the Chaplain and a bugler on the island.
He was fatally injured on June 4, 1944, when thrown from a jeep while in the line of duty.
