Mr. Brackett became an Eagle Scout in 1956, and he graduated from Athens High School in 1959. He earned an Associate of Arts degree from Young Harris College with honors, and graduated from the University of Georgia with BBA, and Master of Accountancy degrees. At UGA he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Beta Alpha Psi honorary societies and Kappa Sigma social fraternity.
From 1965 to 1968, Mr. Brackett served in the U. S. Army and was promoted to the rank of Captain. While serving in the U.S. Army Medical Equipment Research and Development Laboratory at Fort Totten, Flushing, Long Island, New York, he received the U. S. Army Commendation Medal for Outstanding and Meritorious Service, National Defense Medal, and additional citations for outstanding and meritorious service.
During his career in accounting Mr. Brackett was employed by national public accounting firms and by the U. S. Government.
Mr. Brackett is survived by two brothers, Ernest Marshall Brackett, Jr. of Monroe and Benjamin Gaylord Brackett and his wife Ann of Athens; nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 12 P.M. Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at Bridges Funeral Home, followed at 2 P.M. by the funeral at graveside in Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Dr. Jon Appleton officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made the First Baptist Church of Athens, 355 Pulaski St., Athens, Ga. 30601.
