James Henry CARMAN, Jr. (1820-1901)

* father: War of 1812 Veteran, U.S. Private in Colonel D. McCOBB's 45th U.S. Infantry, James Henry CARMAN, Sr. (c.1784-1824) born in New York, USA, dies July 14, 1824, in Southwark, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA, of debility. One account says that James, Sr. is a saddle-tree maker; James, Jr. becomes a saddle-tree maker, too. One note says that James, Sr. is buried in "Cemetery: Methodist Southwark." James, Sr.'s father was American Revolution Veteran, U.S. Private in Colonel S. DRAKE's Milita of Yorktown, New York, Henry CARMAN, Sr. (1746-1816) who loses an arm -- and survives -- from an accidental pistol-shot into his shoulder during the American Revolution.

* mother: Mary (Schellinger) CARMAN (unknown-unknown) born in New Jersey, USA. The 1862 Philadelphia City Directory does list an Aaron SCHELLINGER living at 340 Wharton Street who works as a saddle-tree maker. Maybe Aaron and Mary are related? Mary's father/grandfather may be William Henry SCHELLENGER (1746-1827) of Cape May, (Cape May), New Jersey, USA.

* James, Sr. & Mary have two children on record:
1.) James Henry CARMAN, Jr. (1820-1901) marries Rebecca P. (Brown?) CARMAN (1822-1886), they have possibly eight children. James, Jr. works as a saddle-tree maker; teamster; harness maker; sells flour, feed, and grain at his own store "J.H. Carman & Son" with his son Florence; builds carriages at "J.H. Carman & Co." with John C. BECHTEL and Lewis HAYS -- the feed store and carriage shop are next-door to each other at 672 and 674 North Broad Street; and later as a casemaker. One record suggests that Rebecca P. had previously married a "William Henry COLLIER" and that he fathered her son William Henry before marrying James, Jr. But I never see Rebecca's son listed as a COLLIER, so I will assume that James, Jr. is his father. As a widower, James, Jr. remarries Frances M. (Parker) CARMAN (unknown-unknown); James, Jr. has one more daughter with Frances.
2.) Mary Jane (Carman) MULFORD (1823-unknown/after 1900) marries George W. MULFORD (1820-unknown/after 1900); the 1900 Federal Census says they have one child.

* James, Jr. is born May 20, 1820; Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA.

* January 22, 1840; Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
James, Jr. (19) marries Rebecca P. (Brown?) CARMAN (17). One record suggests that Rebecca had previously married William Henry COLLIER, but I cannot find anything to confirm this.

* James, Jr. & Rebecca have possibly eight children:
1.) Civil War Veteran, U.S. Second-Lieutenant in WOOLDRIDGE's Company of Sappers & Minors attached to the 106th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, William Henry CARMAN, Sr. (1838-1916) works as an architect, marries Annie B. (Daniels?) CARMAN (1840-1894); they have eight children. As a widower, William, Sr. remarries Elizabeth S. M. (Gaillard) CARMAN (1840-1918).
2.) Civil War Veteran, U.S. Sergeant in WOOLDRIDGE's Company of Sappers & Minors attached to the 106th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, James Henry CARMAN, III (1840-1893) works as a wheelwright, marries Selina (McCollum) CARMAN (1849-1884); they have three sons. As a widower, James, III remarries Anna M. (Howe) CARMAN (1856-1899).
3.) Civil War Veteran, U.S. Private, Company B, 72nd/3rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, Charles Florence CARMAN (1842-1870) works as a pattern-maker's apprentice, marries and divorces Susannah F. (Whartnaby)(Carman) RESTINE (1840-1899). Susannah remarries Frederick C. RESTINE in 1868.
4.) Civil War Veteran?, U.S. Private (for twelve days), Company A, 20th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, Sheppard Odgen CARMAN (1844-1865) works as a salesman and a driver, marries Mary? Elizabeth S. B. (Cree)(Carman)(Shuster) HOHENSTEIN (1847-1917); they have one daughter. As a widow, Elizabeth remarries and divorces Philip SHUSTER (1846-unknown/after 1910); they have two children. Philip works as a butcher. Elizabeth remarries Harry HOHENSTEIN (1859-1914) about 1889.
5.) George Shiffer CARMAN (1846-1914) works as an iron moulder, dies from injuries sustained from a trolley car striking his head at age sixty-eight. George's death certificate lists him as a widower.
6.) Florence Ogden CARMAN (1850-1918) marries Catherine Elizabeth "Kate" (Pinder) CARMAN (1852-1928); they have three sons. Florence works in the flour, grain, and feed family store with his father.
7.) Annie (Carman) RIEGNER (1852-unknown/after 1900) marries Howard Y. RIEGNER (1848-unknown/after 1900); they have five children. Howard works as a machinist.
8.) Charlotte A. CARMAN (1872-1877) lives five years. Charlotte's death record does list James & Rebecca as her parents, but Charlotte's listed address of 812 East Norris Street does not match other known addresses. Rebecca is fifty years old when Charlotte is born in 1872.

* James, Jr. works as a saddle-tree maker, teamster, harness maker.

* 1865
James, Jr. (45) owns "J.H. Carman & Son" at 674 North Broad Street in Philadelphia, where he and his son Florence (15) sell flour, grain, and feed.

* 1873
James, Jr. (53) owns "J.H. Carman & Co." with John C. BECHTEL and Lewis HAYS; they build carriages. The address is 672 North Broad Street, which must be next-door to his flour, grain, and feed store.

* July 19, 1886; Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
James, Jr. is sixty-six years old when Rebecca dies.

* September 3, 1887; Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
James, Jr. (67) remarries Frances M. (Parker) CARMAN (age unknown).

* James, Jr. has one more daughter with Frances:
9.) Josephine CARMAN (1888-unknown)

* June 6, 1900; 1732 West Diamond Street, Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
James, Jr. (80) lives with his daughter Annie & son-in-law Howard Y. RIEGNER. The 1900 Federal Census notes that James, Jr. has been married for ten years (not thirteen years), so he may have married a third time.

* James, Jr. dies June 12, 1901; 1732 West Diamond Street, Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA.
Æ 81 years, 23 days
Cause of death: chronic bronchitis

* James, Jr. is buried June 15, 1901; Mount Peace Cemetery, Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA

* Section K, Lot 139
According to online records for Mount Peace Cemetery, at least seven CARMAN family members are buried together:
1.) Rebecca P. CARMAN (1822-1886) Æ 63 years
2.) Charles F. CARMAN
3.) Sheppard CARMAN
4.) Mary Ann OGDEN
5.) James Henry CARMAN, III (1840-1893) Æ 53 years
6.) James Henry CARMAN, Jr. (1820-1901) Æ 81 years
7.) George S. CARMAN (1846-1914) Æ 68 years

* I called the cemetery office; they believe the family plot does have a grave marker. I wonder if it is one of those four-sided grave markers.
