John Anstruther-Thomson of Charleton and Carntyne was born on 8 August 1818.1 He was the son of John Anstruther-Thomson and Clementina Blair. He married, firstly, Caroline Maria Agnes Robina Gray, daughter of Reverend John Hamilton Gray of Carntyne and Caroline Elizabeth Johnstone, on 25 July 1852. He married, secondly, Isabel Bruce, daughter of Lt.-Gen. Robert Bruce, on 17 June 1891. He died on 8 October 1904 at age 86.
He succeeded to the title of 18th Lord Sinclair [S., 1449] on 10 April 1833, but for the attainder. He gained the rank of Officer in the service of the 9th Lancers and 13th Light Dragoons. He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the service of the Fife and Forfar Imperial Yeomanry. He was decorated with the award of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Officers' Decoration (V.D.) He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Fife. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Fife. He lived at Carntyne, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He lived at Charleton, Fife, Scotland.
